Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade
The Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade will take place
Sunday, March 2nd, 2025
Pre Registration Check-in and on-site registration ($30) will begin at Noon on 21st and Harborside at Pier 21.
Costume Contest Judging Starts at 12:30 with winners announced at 1pm!
The Parade begins our march through the Strand at 1:30pm.
Stemming from a desire for locals and their pets to have a way to be involved in the Mardi Gras! Galveston festivities, The Galveston Island Humane Society created the Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Parade in 1998, and this crowd-pleasing event has been going strong ever since!
The festivities will kick off with our Costume Contest Judging will start at 12:30 at Pier 21. The winners will get to participate as one of the lead elements in the parade as well as receiving their award. Make sure to come dressed to impress!
Costume Contest Categories are:
1. Best Mardi Gras-themed Pet Costume
2. Best group pet costumes
3. Best decorated mode of transportation
4. Most original pet costumes
5. Best Pet/person matching costume
6. Judge’s special award
Leading the parade each year is the “Elite Pet Owner”- a title awarded at the annual, Paws Gala, which is held each September. This year, the winner was Natalie "Fox" Maisel and her pet Tulip LaRue.
The Krewe also is continuing the Cat’s Eye View Balcony Party, which grows bigger and better each year.
Sponsors, walkers, and donors will all help us produce a successful event that will help so many animals.
Proceeds from this walk will support our community programs including; emergency care, spay/neuter assistance, and vaccination and microchip clinics.
Registration is "per pet" and they may bring their favorite people! Event shirts are not guaranteed for late or on site registrations.
Rabies vaccines are required for all cats and dogs. Please bring proof

Bright and Furry Petmas
Are you ready for a fun family friendly furry and festive event at Saengerfest Park? So are we!
On December 14th we will have adoptable animals, and a slew of festivities to enjoy. We are still accepting vendors and will be releasing more information about this event soon. Mark your calendars as we are making our final arrangements! This will surely be a day worth visiting the strand!
Santa Paws at Toms Thumb Nursery
It's time for our Annual Santa Paws event! The Galveston Community is invited to come out to Tom's Thumb by Cornelius Nursery to have their pet's picture take with Santa and Mrs. Claus!
We will not be bringing shelter animals to this event, but we always have a good time and get some great holiday photos to boot!
Moody Market Adoption Event
Hosted by the Moody Methodist Church in Galveston, Texas, Moody Market celebrates the talents of local artists in a family-friendly setting. Each year, vendors and shoppers gather to share delicious meals at the Moody Market Café and participate in what has become an annual artistic tradition. Featuring an auction, book sale, Sweet Shoppe and various local businesses, the festival strives to engage and unify the community. In addition to benefiting the artists and vendors, the event raises funds for outreach and mission work carried out by the Moody Methodist Church over the course of the year.
GIHS will be out at the Moody Market at Moody Methodist Church on November 23rd from 11am till 3pm.
We will have many of our available animals on site for adoption we will also have our @galvestonhumane merch and GIHS information available for all. Come by and visit with our amazing animals!

2024 Ohana Surf Dog Competition

The Big Fix 2024
The Galveston Island Humane Society is hosting a
FREE Spay / Neuter Day
for Low to No Income Galveston Island Residents.
This event will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2024.
This event is open to low to no income residents of Galveston Island, spay / neuter surgery and vaccinations will be provided on a first come, first served basis.
Canines, Felines, community cats are all welcome!

GHIS is hosting a Pet Pantry with the Houston Humane Society.
Jordan's Way - Live Fundraiser
We are thrilled to announce that we will be teaming up with Kris Rotonda of Jordan’s Way for an innovative online fundraiser at our shelter!
The Jordan's Way team will be here on Monday, May 20th from 10:00am - 1:00pm for a 3-Hour Live Facebook fundraiser as part of their National Tour! The live event will feature silly activities and tasks completed by our staff, volunteers, and prominent community members. You can view our associated Facebook Fundraiser here - Please INVITE, TAG and SHARE this to everyone you know to help us reach our goal!
Our goal for this event is ambitious: we aim to raise $60,000 to purchase an adoption trailer that will enhance our off-site adoption events throughout the year. Achieving this goal will require the collective effort of our supportive community!

Jordan’s Way is dedicated to sharing meaningful animal welfare stories that inspire people to adopt. Our efforts are publicized on social media to influence the Clearing of Shelters. Through our community outreach and advocacy, we create a buzz around shelters that builds a compassionate community of pet parents willing to provide a permanent home. Any donation made goes directly to funding our next shelter visit or to shelters in need.

The Grand Kids Festival
The Grand Kids Festival is to provide participatory access to the fine arts for all children through an extension of The Grand's educational outreach and children's programming, to raise an appreciation and awareness of the fine arts for children, to demonstrate the talent and ability of children in the greater Galveston/Houston area, and to create a visible, broad-based event which adheres to The Grand's mission.
The Galveston Island Humane Society will have a booth at this year’s festival, with information about our adoption, foster, and volunteer programs. We will also have dogs available for adoption!
Adoption Event - AFSP Hike for Hope @ McGuire Dent Recreation Center
GIHS will be hosting a special adoption event at the Hike for Hope 5K Walk, where you can meet adorable adoptable animals ready to steal your heart. ❤️
Admission for this event is FREE - everyone is welcome to join in the fun and you might even take home a new furry family member! Join us as we stride towards a better tomorrow for animals in need! 🚶♂️🐾
Adoption Event - Moody Gardens 4D Theater
GIHS will be hosting a special adoption event right at Moody Gardens, where you can meet some of our animals looking for their fur-ever home. 💙🐾
• March 9th from 1PM - 4PM
• March 12, 13, 14 from 11AM - 4PM
Bring the kiddos along and enjoy a showing to the "DC League of Super-Pets: 4D Experience" while you stop by - see you there!

The Galveston Humane Society’s (GIHS) 24th Annual Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Mardi Gras parade will host the 8th Annual “A Cat’s Eye View” parade viewing party on the balcony of Trolley Station Building. This party gives you prime viewing of three family fun parades: The Shriners Hospital for Children & Sunshine Kids Parade, our Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade and the Children’s Parade. This year we have added additional “fun” family activities.

The Parade and Viewing Party are not only fun, but they raise money for our community support programs, including Spay/Neuter Assistance and Vaccination and Microchip clinics. 21st Annual PAWS Gala
Our 21st Annual PAWS Gala, benefitting the Galveston Island Humane Society, will celebrate the sounds of The Beatles at our PAWberry Fields FURever party Saturday, September 23rd at the Galveston Island Convention Center at The San Luis Resort and Conference Center.
Come Together and celebrate as we honor a longtime supporter and beloved friend, Mary Ann Salch Murphy, who epitomizes the very definition of an animal advocate. Mary Ann has donated an enduring amount of her time to the animals through her volunteer work at events, chairing fundraisers, vocally promoting our mission, and financially backing our many causes, such as adoption programs, spay/neuter assistance, education, medical needs, and much more. She is an outstanding and reputable member of the community and is known for her kindness and concern for what’s best for the island and all of its citizens.
The PAWS Gala is our largest annual fundraiser, allowing us to continue and advance our work!
