Pet-A-Palooza - A Note from our Veterinary Consultant

You may know that the Galveston Island Humane Society is not able to staff a full time veterinarian but it does not stop them from providing the best care possible for the animals in their charge.

I am currently assisting them as their veterinary consultant. My goal is to improve the overall well-being of animal housed at the shelter and increase their adoptability. My weekly visits include: examining pets that the staff or volunteers are concerned about, diagnosing and treating sick animals, and answering questions or making suggestions related to the individual animal's health and care. We also work closely on healthcare protocols. There is a lot involved in the ever-changing world of shelter medicine, but one goal remains consistent, to care for these animals and get them into good homes.

This year the Galveston Island Humane Society is hosting a new community event called Pet-A-Palooza Galveston, Saturday, April 29th from 10 am - 4 pm. This event will combine some of the fun we had at our previous, Bark in the Park, with some new attractions to involve more community participation and support. This year our Pet-A-Palooza will be held on the grounds of the First Lutheran Church at 24th and Winnie. Along with fun, friendly dog competitions, we will have vendors both inside and outside of the Lyceum, a kid's zone, food trucks, and refreshments. No shelter event would be complete without an adoption village, and ours will feature six area shelters, an Ask the Vet booth, and a microchip clinic. One of the highlights of the day will be the Pee Wee Bowen Band, in concert!

Pet-A-Palooza is one of our major fundraising events that supports our work at the shelter. The funds raised help in all areas of the shelter including keeping the GIHS tech office stocked with medical supplies, vaccinations, basic first aid, and other essential supplies necessary to treat many animals onsite. If it were not for the generous donations received from such a wonderful and fun community-wide event, we may not be able to do what we do now for the thousands of homeless animals.

The Animal Clinic, Galveston Veterinary Clinic, and Campeche Cove Animal & Bird Hospital all work closely with the shelter to provide excellent services and GIHS recommends each of the clinics to families for their newly adopted pets. They encourage all pet owners to establish a good relationship with their local veterinarians for the animal's long-term care and health.

The Pet-a-Palooza fun begins with a progressive party on the evening of April 28th for sponsors who support this event at a $500 level and above. More details are available on the website.

We look forward to a great turn out at this year's upcoming Pet-A-Palooza.  It is sure to be another wonderful family friendly "free" event for the Island and surrounding areas. For more information see below.
